It’s August 11 today. Five months have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred on March 11…. Fireworks will be displayed at the coastal area of the Pacific Ocean in the devastated Tohoku region tonight. This project titled “LIGHT UP NIPPON” is aimed at cheering up Japan with power of fireworks, which originally have the nature to commemorate the deceased or to make a wish for recovery.

The Japan Foundation supports this “LIGHT UP NIPPON” project, which has been developing to the big event as many people in the various fields are participating.

Following Obon, the season of summer festivals has come in Tohoku.

Other traditional festivals than “LIGHT UP NIPPON” are also planned to take place throughout the disaster-hit areas. I guess it must be really hard to hold festivals in the situation that they lost their houses! But I’ve heard many people in Tohoku rethink of the meaning and roots of traditional festivals in their home towns, look straightly at their situations, and are working hard to make the festivals successful for victims, community, recovery and themselves.

Some summer festivals are considered to welcome the spirits of the deceased for annual returning during the Obon. I watched on TV a person who was interviewed and made a comment that we should hold festivals specially this year since many people lost their lives in the earthquake, otherwise, the spirits of those victims may get lost. I’m so much moved by the behavior of people in Tohoku featured by the media every day.

Frankly speaking, much attention has not been paid to the meaning or roots of fireworks and festivals in Japan. Of course, such festivals mean a lot to the local citizens, but not to tourists from other areas of the country. Most tourists didn’t even know their meaning or roots. The situation has changed now; fireworks and festivals increasingly become important as a symbol of people’s strong wish and determination for recovery, based on their original meaning or roots.

The Great East Japan Earthquake is said to give a big impact on the way of thinking of people. Some people realized the value of spending time with their families. Some think of their community, or show sympathy for others. Many people feel “It is not normal to spend peaceful everyday life, which used to be”. This change in feeling might be giving influence on a look at our own cultures!
